Construction

My hidden skill

My father passed away and I decided to go back to my country and to my family for support. Well, after almost twenty years I went back to Iran with no clear plan. I just knew that I have to be there for a while to take care of my mother. When I saw my mother suffering being in the same house where she had lived with my father for more than fourty years, I thought "somehow, I have to make her forget her husband footprint in that house". At the other hand I wanted to fill my time and earn money. Therefore I rented another house and began to demolish our father's house which was now an old building and began preparations for building an apartment on the same ground.

My nephew was an architect and four of my best friends had the consulting, construction company where I had work for as software employe many years ago. Two of these friends were masters of construction. At the other hand I had also learned lot of other engineering skills during my software career. Reading and understanding structural and architectural drawings and electrical, water, waste and gas pipelines and installations was absolutely no problem for me. I could also calculate the material needed for each matterial from drawings, like the amount of cement, steel bars, wires, pipes, etc. needed for the construction of buildings.

The most important point was the self esteem that I had built up during my career. At the other hand, we (my brother, sister and me) had enough money to end the project. Therefore it was not a hard decision to make and soon I began my first construction project. Well, I have to say that this was not anything compareable to any other jobs and projects that I had done before in my life. This was the most challenging job I had ever done. The way things are done in Europe is totally different than how they are done in Iran also the mentality of Iranians is completely different. First I had to adapt to my new environment and change my approch of doing things. Second I had to change my 9 to 5 working habit. This was not only about finishing a project. It was about 90% of the families capital. No error or fail was permitted. There were enough days that my working hours exceeded 12 hours a day. Somethimes even in the middle of a night because the land was situated in city center and unloading truck was only at night permited.
